Connect Sonos Roam to Turntable (3 Methods)

There are essentially three ways to connect a Sonos Roam speaker to a turntable or record player.

We’ll go through each method in detail in this guide.

Method 1: Use a turntable with Bluetooth functionality and stream music wirelessly from the turntable to the Sonos Roam using Bluetooth.

Method 2: Use a traditional turntable without Bluetooth functionality and a separate Bluetooth adapter and stream music wirelessly to the Sonos Roam using Bluetooth.

Method 3: Hook up the turntable to a Sonos Port (or Sonos Five/Amp) and stream music wirelessly to the Sonos Roam using WiFi.

As we see in the table below, the Sonos Roam does not have an analog input.

The lack of an analog input makes it impossible to connect the turntable and the Sonos Roam physically using a regular RCA interconnect cable.

There are luckily several options to connect the Sonos Roam wirelessly to a turntable. Let’s explore each method in detail.

Method 1: Connect Sonos Roam to a Bluetooth turntable

The simplest and arguably most elegant method to connect a Sonos Roam speaker to a turntable is to use a turntable with built-in Bluetooth functionality

With this method, we utilize the Bluetooth transmitter inside the turntable and the Bluetooth receiver inside the Sonos Roam to connect the two units wirelessly.

We can then stream music wirelessly from the Bluetooth turntable to the Sonos Roam.

Note that this will only work with turntables that have Bluetooth transmitter functionality.

Some Bluetooth record players with built-in speakers have Bluetooth receiver functionality that enables them to connect to smartphones etc. and operate as Bluetooth speakers. This is common for suitcase-style record players. Record players with Bluetooth receiver functionality cannot stream music wirelessly to Sonos Roam.

You’ll find a list of great Bluetooth turntables that work with Sonos Roam in our Best Turntables with Bluetooth article.

Benefits with this method

  • Elegant, no separate boxes needed
  • Elegant, no cables needed
  • Easy to set up
  • Cost friendly

Downsides with this method

  • You have to re-invest in a new turntable if you already own one without Bluetooth functionality
  • Will only work with one Sonos speaker (not two for stereo)
  • Maximum wireless range is about 30 feet with Bluetooth (Will not work through walls)

Method 2: Connect Sonos Roam to a regular turntable using a Bluetooth adapter

If you already have a turntable without Bluetooth functionality, it is possible to connect a Bluetooth transmitter to the turntable to make it Bluetooth capable.

A regular turntable connected to a separate Bluetooth transmitter can stream music wirelessly to the Sonos Roam speaker.

The Bluetooth adapter that I recommend is the ZIIDOO Bluetooth 5.0 Transmitter and Receiver. There are however many options to choose from. Click the link to see my top recommendations and many alternatives on Amazon.

Depending on the connectors on your turntable, you may also need a 3.5mm to RCA converter (male or female). You will find that on Amazon.

If your turntable doesn’t have a built-in phono preamp, you will need to include a separate phono preamp between the turntable and the Bluetooth transmitter. You will find a very cheap phono preamp that performs well in my Best Phono Preamps for Turntables article.

Benefits with this method

  • You can use your existing turntable
  • Cost friendly

Downsides with this method

  • Adds an extra box to your setup
  • Adds some complexity to your system
  • Will only work with one Sonos speaker (not two for stereo)
  • Maximum wireless range is about 30 feet with Bluetooth (Will not work through walls)

Method 3: Connect Sonos Roam to a turntable using a Sonos Port

A third way to connect a turntable to a Sonos Roam is to use a Sonos Port

Just as with a Bluetooth adapter, the Sonos Port connects to the turntable and streams music wirelessly to the Sonos Roam. The Sonos Port uses the WiFi protocol which gives better bandwidth and better sound quality than the Bluetooth protocol.

PS! You can also use a Sonos Five speaker or a Sonos Amp as your “connectivity hub” the same way as a Sonos Port. The Sonos Five and Sonos Port can also connect physically to a turntable and stream music wirelessly to all your Sonos speakers.
